Key takeaways

  • Self-pay MRI at Millenium MRI's Florida centers is $300 per scan.

  • Our Florida centers are in Ocala, Largo and Tamarac.

  • Self-pay patients do not need a referral. Insurance patients need a doctor's order.

  • Before you book anywhere, ask what the quoted price includes for your exact exam.

MRI cost without insurance in Florida: what to expect

If you pay out of pocket, where you get your scan can make a big difference. Hospitals often charge much more for the same MRI than an independent imaging center does. Part of the reason is overhead: hospitals carry higher costs and often add facility fees to outpatient imaging bills.

Independent centers like Millenium MRI usually have lower overhead, which helps keep prices down. Our Florida self-pay price is one clear number, $300 per scan, so you know the cost before you book.

Hospital prices can also be hard to find ahead of time. Many patients only learn the full amount when the bill arrives. To learn more about why imaging prices vary so much, read why MRI costs are so high.

What changes the out-of-pocket price of an MRI?

Two MRI quotes are only worth comparing if they cover the same exam. Several things can change the price:

  • Body area. A knee, a lower back and a brain are different exams.

  • Number of areas. Scanning two body parts usually means two scans.

  • Contrast. Some exams elsewhere use a contrast dye given through an IV, which adds cost. Millenium MRI performs non-contrast MRI only.

  • Facility type. Hospitals often add facility fees that independent centers do not.

  • Reading fee. Some places bill the radiologist's report separately.

Questions to ask before you book

Before you book a self-pay MRI anywhere, ask:

  1. What is the total price for my exact exam, including the body part?

  2. Does my exam use contrast, and does that change the price?

  3. Does the price include the radiologist's report?

  4. Will there be any separate facility fee?

  5. When will my doctor get the results?

At Millenium MRI, share your exact order or exam name when you call or contact us online, so the team can confirm what your visit includes.

Do you need a referral for a self-pay MRI in Florida?

Not at Millenium MRI. Self-pay patients do not need a referral. If you want to use insurance, you need a doctor's order.

Do you need a referral?

What to know

Self-pay (cash)

No referral needed

Insurance

Yes, a doctor's order

Your plan decides coverage, copays and any prior authorization

Workers' comp or personal injury

Yes, usually an order

Bring your claim details or attorney contact

Even if you do not need a referral, it is a good idea to talk with your doctor about which scan fits your symptoms. That way the right body part and exam are imaged, and your doctor can go over the results with you. Policies at other imaging centers can differ, so always check before you book.

When self-pay can make sense

Some patients choose self-pay even when they have insurance. Common reasons include a high deductible they have not met, a plan that does not cover the scan, or wanting a clear price without waiting for insurance approval. Compare your expected insurance cost with the self-pay price before you decide. Learn more in our guide to the benefits of paying cash for your MRI.

A note on full body MRI

A full body MRI is a screening scan, not a diagnosis. It can sometimes find unexpected things that turn out to be harmless but still lead to more tests. Talk with your doctor about whether a screening scan makes sense for you.

What to expect on scan day

Arrive a few minutes early to fill out a short safety form. Tell the team about any metal in your body, such as a pacemaker, joint replacement or clips, and bring any implant card you have. Wear comfortable clothes without metal.

Most patients are in and out in about 35 minutes, depending on the exam. ARRT-certified technologists perform the scan, and a board-certified radiologist reads your images. Results usually go to your doctor within 24 hours. You can also view your images and report through the MRI Portal.

At Millenium MRI, a self-pay MRI is $300 per scan at our Ocala, Largo and Tamarac centers. Prices elsewhere vary, so ask what any quote includes for your exact exam.

Can I get an MRI without a referral in Florida?

Yes, at Millenium MRI, if you pay cash. Self-pay patients do not need a referral. Insurance patients need a doctor's order. Other centers may have different rules.

Why do hospitals charge more for an MRI?

Hospitals often have higher overhead and may add facility fees to outpatient imaging. Independent centers usually have lower costs, so their prices are often lower for the same type of scan.

Is an MRI better than a CT scan?

Neither is best for everything. MRI shows soft tissue in detail and uses no radiation, while CT uses X-rays and is fast. Your doctor picks the test that fits your symptoms. See our guide to MRI vs. CT scans.

What if I need more than one body part scanned?

Each body area is usually a separate scan. Call the center with your order so the team can tell you how many scans your visit involves before you book.
