What is an MRI?

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. It uses a strong magnet and radio waves to make detailed pictures of the inside of your body. It does not use X-rays or ionizing radiation.

MRI is very good at showing soft tissue. That includes the brain, spinal cord, discs, muscles, ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and many organs. Problems that do not show up well on an X-ray can often be seen on an MRI. To learn more, read what is an MRI and MRI scans and radiation.

Why your doctor may order an MRI

Doctors order MRIs for many reasons. Some common ones are:

  • Back or neck pain that does not go away, or pain that spreads into an arm or leg

  • A sports or work injury to the knee, shoulder, hip, or ankle

  • Headaches, dizziness, or other symptoms your doctor wants to look into

  • Pain or injury after a car accident

  • Checking how a known condition is changing over time

Your doctor decides which body part to scan and what type of MRI you need. If you are not sure why a scan was ordered, ask your doctor.

What to look for in an MRI center

Not all imaging centers are the same. When you choose where to get your MRI, it helps to ask:

  1. Who reads the images? At Millenium MRI, board-certified radiologists read every scan.

  2. Who runs the scan? Our technologists are ARRT-certified.

  3. How fast will my doctor get the report? Our results are usually sent to the referring doctor within 24 hours.

  4. How soon can I be seen? Same-day appointments are often available.

  5. How can I pay? We accept most insurance plans, workers' compensation, personal injury cases, and self-pay.

  6. What will it cost? Our costs are often lower than hospital imaging because we have lower overhead.

How to book your MRI

  1. Ask your doctor to send your MRI order to Millenium MRI.

  2. Call the Ocala center at (352) 900-5501. Calling early in the day helps if you want a same-day time.

  3. Tell staff how you plan to pay.

  4. Answer the safety questions about metal, implants, and past surgeries.

Some insurance plans must approve an MRI first. If yours does, that can affect timing.

On the day of your scan

Wear comfortable clothes with no metal, and leave jewelry at home. Bring a photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, and a list of your medicines. For most MRIs, you can eat and take your usual medicines unless you were told otherwise.

When you arrive, staff check you in and review the safety form. An ARRT-certified technologist then brings you to the scanner. You lie on a padded table, get earplugs or headphones for the noise, and stay as still as you can while the pictures are taken. The technologist can see and talk with you the whole time.

Most patients are in and out in about 35 minutes. For a step-by-step look, read our complete guide to what to expect before, during and after your MRI.

After your MRI

You can usually go back to your normal day right away. A board-certified radiologist reads the images and sends a report to your doctor. Results are usually sent within 24 hours. Your doctor will talk with you about what the results mean.

MRI after a car accident or work injury

If you were hurt in a car accident or on the job, your doctor may order an MRI to look for injuries to the spine, discs, joints, or soft tissue that an X-ray may not show. Millenium MRI accepts personal injury cases and workers' compensation.

When you call, let staff know if your scan is part of an injury case. Have your claim number or your attorney's contact details ready, if you have them. If you have questions about your claim, talk with your attorney. To learn more about imaging after a crash, read the importance of MRI scans after a car accident.
